Rolf Jacob Sartorius, a boy born in Oklahoma was raised in Tulsa. He was brought to Virginia to be adopted after his parents were sick and were not able or willing to provide care. The adoptive family were raised at home in Reston Virginia. When he was seven years old, he began singing in musicals, and discovered his love for performing. In the days before the closing of Vine, an American short-form video hosting service in 2017, Sartorius lip-syncing videos posted through the site gained an impressive eight million subscribers in August of 2016. The social network he was a part of could be his way of escaping bullying because he had been an innocent victim. He said before Musical.ly that he wasn't very active. He believed that everyone watched him except for the camera.
